It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia – why it’s perfect

Hello everyone how are you doing? I’m fine, mostly. School is keeping me busy, but I’m hoping to get back into my writing routine soon.

Anyways,  this is the first post of my TV show recommendations series. I love watching tv. I watch Tv shows everyday. I hate silence, because I hate being left alone with my own thoughts ( I mean, who does, right? ), so I often fill the silence with The Simpsons reruns or some other show. I wanted to start this series with the best sitcom ever created and believe me, I don’t take that lightly. I thought long and hard about it and came to conclusion that Sunny is the best one. Ever.

My journey with Sunny is split into three parts. When I first discovered it I liked it. I watched a couple of episodes, but made the mistake of not watching them chronologically and just randomly picking through them, leading me to miss the great ones. Those I watched were good, the series just hadn’t impressed me enough to watch them all. Boy was I wrong.

Couple of months later I was bored and decided to give Sunny a second chance. That’s when I fell in love with it. Couple of days ago, I re- discovered the series again and confirmed, that Sunny is the best and funniest Tv show ever. That is of course only subjective opinion, but I will attempt to explain, why I love it so much and hopefully you’ll give it a try as well.

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia follows four (five If you count Frank) friends living and owning a bar in Philadelphia. The gang consists of Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dee and Frankn(played by the brilliant Danny DeVito). They are horrible, horrible people. They are alcoholics, ignorant, offensive, rude, sociopathic (especially Dennis) and painfully, painfully dumb.

It’s important to say, that Sunny is completely different from shows like Family Guy (a show that  I hate). Family Guy has a lot of horrible characters, unlike Sunny however the show is offensive just for the sake of it. Characters in MacFarlane’s show are laughing at the horrible things, they know it’s bad, but they also thing things like rape are hilarious. They’re like the most obnoxious, offensive guy you know, who defends himself with a line “i’s just a joke” after saying something offensive and horrible.

The characters on Sunny however do horrible things, but they don’t know it’s horrible, they are so stupid and egoistic, that they think everything they do is great and right. Sunny has also ruined me for other Tv shows, because the character are so complex. You know them, but you also don’ really know what they’re going to do next or how they’re going to act. I’ve never seen characters so real and well- written. The dialogue is also perfect. That is what drives the show. It is so real and natural. This exchange between Mac and Dennis is one of the funniest of the show.

The gang often finds themselves in absurd situations. Usually the situation starts normally, but the gang always respond to it in an over the top fashion, and the situation escalates pretty quickly. For example: reading about an exposition in a local museum and ending up getting trapped inside someone’s house trying to steal an expensive vase. Playing a board game and ending up locked in the basement. Getting a bad review and ending up kidnaping the writer, his neighbour and his cat. And so on. Seriously every episode of Sunny is a gift.

That being said it is not a show for everyone. Before you start watching it you have to release yourself from the usual sitcom concept. This is not an emotional show. This is not a show about friendship. Don’t expect anything like Friends or Parks and rec. definitely not. If I had to compare it to some more “traditional” sitcom I would say Community, but that is still far too emotional compared to Sunny. If you do decide to watch it (and seriously, you should, it’s brilliant) try to keep an open mind. Maybe you won’t  like it so much at first, but after few episodes it will grow on you.

As your first episode I would recommend season 7 episode 7 CharDee MacDennis: A game of games. It is one of the greatest Sunny episodes ever created, you don’t really have to know anything what previously happened on the show. This episode also shows the character’s dynamic and chemistry together.

Some of my favourite episodes:

  • CharDee MacDennis: Electric Boogaloo – kind of a sequel to the episode I just mentioned
  • The Nightman Cometh – A classic. Charlie writes a musical. Really, there’s nothing more to add. It’s great.
  • The Gang Gets Trapped
  • Frank’s Pretty Woman
  • Sweet Dee Has A Heart Attack
  • Who Pooped The Bed
  • The Dennis System

So what makes Sunny so good. The characters, the writing, the absurd storylines, the amazing and talented cast are the main reasons, there is however something else. See , what Sunny does so well is satire. something that is missing from today’s culture. Tv is full of parody, but satire is missing. Sunny is pushing the boundaries, it is discussing topics other shows would not dare. It is making fun not of pop-culture but of society as a whole. That’s why it’s so different and that’s why I like it so much.

Please go watch Sunny, It’s great, I promise.

TV Show Tag

Today I’m going to be doing a TV show Tag i found here.  I love watching Tv Shows as much as I enjoy watching movies, so this should be fun.

1. First TV Show you ever watched

Ever since I can remember me and my siblings always watched an episode of Friends on the telly before we went to bed. I love Friends, I have so many memories watching this show like binge watching it with my friend on a school night, watching it again the day before my wedding. This show is funny, kind and quotable. Yes the show lost some of that in the later seasons and some of the relationships were a little cringe worthy (*cough* Joe and Rachel *cough*), but that will never erase the good things Friend has given me.

2. All time favourite TV Show

There’s no way I’ll be able to name just one, so I’m gonna list a couple of them.

Community – One of the funniest sitcoms ever, it also has a lot of heart. The thing that drives this series is incredibly smart, hilarious and self-aware writing. I have recently posted list of my favourite episodes, so check that out If you want.

Jessica Jones – Not only a great super hero series, it is one of the best drama series out there. Jessica Jones is part of the Marvel cinematic Universe, but don’t expect a typical Marvel’s “family fun” approach. The series is dark, gritty and thrilling. David Tennant brings to life one of the best villans ever written.

Arrested Development – I only discovered this series a while ago and absolutely fell in love with it. It is a story of a wealthy family who lost everything and a one son who had no choice but to keep them all together (wink). The story is maybe not as much self- aware as Community, but the narration gives it many hilarious jokes.

Sherlock – BBC series that brought Benedict Cumberbatch to stardom is a smart and thrilling adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective stories. The last season was disappointing, but the show overall is great.

Parks and Recreation – Hilarious, funny, with a lot of heart. Mockumentary style gives the writers extra opportunity to be hilarious, the cast led with the amazing Amy Poehler is super talented and charming.

Bob’s Burgers – My favourite Tv family, the parents are fun and supportive of their kids. Tina is the best written female character, Louise is a bad ass and Gene loves pop – culture and challenges typical masculinity.

Game of Thrones- If you have been on the internet for the last couple of week you’re probably sick with reading about GOT. If you haven’t watched it at least give it a try, it may blow your mind.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia – hilarious series about horrible people, doing horrible things. The gang consists of five narcissistic, slightly sociophatic friends, who get themselves into absurd situations.

Doctor Who – BBC series that is on the air for more than 50 years follows a story of a time- travelling alien. My favourite doctor is withnout a doubt Matt Smith’s 11th doctor. If you want to get into the show, but don’t know where to start try the 5 season episode called “Vincent and the Doctor”which is arguably the best episode of the new Who.

3.Your character crush

That really changes according to what show I’m currently watching, right now I would say Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) from Community.

4.Favourite OTP

I have too many! But I will forever love Piper and Leo, Leslie and Ben, Amy and Rory

5.Most disappointing ending or cancellation

I will forever cry about the cancellation of Selfie,  lovely sitcom starring Karen Gillan and John Cho.

6. A show you’d like to be on

Brooklyn nine- nine has such amazing cast, it would be fun to spend time with them.

7.A character you’d love to take out on a date

Probably Michael Bluth, he seems like he needs a break.

8. A popular TV Show you can’t stand

The Walking Dead. It’s not that I can’t stand it I’m just not a fan of the genre and it has been around forever.

9. A scene that made you cry like a baby

I’m very emotional, so there are many of them. From the top of my head I can think about the scene in Doctor who, when the Doctor brings Vincent to the art museum. The other is when Shay dies on Chicago Fire.

10. A character with a killer wardrobe

This has to be Fran Fine from the Nanny, every outfit she wore was a statement. She is my fashion icon since childhood. Her larger than life hairstyle only added to her quirky style.

That’s all for the tag, I hope you enjoyed reading it and hopefully got inspired to watch some of these brilliant shows!

top 10 Best Community Episodes

I’ve recently binge watched Community (again) and I decided to put together a list of the best Community episodes! Please know that this list is subjective and based on my opinions. Enjoy!

10. Home Economics – season 1, episode 8

This one maybe isn’t the best one, but it is one of my favourites. The study group learns that Jeff is living in his car and try to help him, by making him living with Abed. Meanwhile Annie helps Troy set up a date for another girl and Pierce joins Britta’s ex- boyfriend Vaughn’s band. The highlight of this episode and the reason I like it so much is Pierce and Vaughn’s interactions. Also I love Shirley in this one, she is more in the background, but her observations about the others are great. Plus I have a “Pierce you’re a B” stuck in my head for days every time I watch this episode.

9. Epidemiology – season 2, episode 6

Pierce and few other student eat contaminated food at the school Halloween party, causing them to exhibit flu- like symptoms, making them act like zombies bacause the pathogen spreads through bites. The study group must save themselves by lowering the temperature on the campus. Shirley and Chang get closer, Troy finds his costume too nerdy and cannot impress girls, Jeff hatred for Rich the doctor is hilarious, as is his fear about ruining his expensive suit.  What I love the most about this episode is the ABBA greatest hits playing in the background creating hilarious contrast with the scary theme of the episode.

The 10 Best Movie & TV Fathers

Happy Father’s day everyone! I hope you’re having a great day. I prepared a list of some of the best movie and Tv fathers of all time. Comment me your favorites and enjoy reading!

Bob Belcher (Bob’s Burgers)

Bob is easily the best fictional father out there. He loves his wife and kids, but isn’t afraid to point out their flaws. He supports each of his children, whatever he gets his leg waxed with Tina, watches old movies with Gene or follows Louise’s shenanigans. Plus he has the dad jokes and puns for life. All around Bob is simple guy, he loves Thanksgiving, his restaurant and his family.

Arthur Weasley (Harry Potter franchise)

J.K Rowling admitted in 2016 that she intended to kill Mr. Weasley in the last book of the series, but couldn’t part with him. The fathers in Harry Potter books were either horrible, or dead so it is not surprising Rowling wanted to save the beast one fo them all.

Homer Simpson (The Simpsons)

homer simpson the simpsons homer pig marge GIF

Now, Homer is lazy, stupid and often drunk, but he is the kind of father you wish you had. Sometimes he ignores his kids and is a little bit irresponsible, but he loves his children and wife. I’m not a fan of abuse in sake of comedy and that what keeps Homer from being the best animated dad out there.

Phil Dunphy (Modern Family)

Modern Family has great fathers,Phil is the best, he is supportive, fun, and a little silly, but he never fails to support his children and provide them with a great advice. Plus he likes to dance and he is a magician!

Gru (Despicable Me)

despicable me steve carell gif

Gru is a great example, that you don’t have to be a biological father to be a good one. It took him some time, to warm up to the girls, but once he got there he became one of the best.

Marlin (Finding Nemo)

Marlin is a loving father, who is willing to do anything for his son. The greatest thing about him is that we get to see his journey and change throughout the movie. His interactions with Dory are funny and adorable.

George Banks (The Father of The Bride)

Steve Martin gives a charming performance as a father organizing perfect wedding for his only daughter. His anxiety and concern for his daughter’s happiness is cute and funny. And he paid for that big, crazy expensive wedding!”

Danny Tanner (Full House)

The thing I always liked about Danny is that he listens to his children and always tries to help them with their problems. He built their self-confidence, but he also punished them when their did something wrong. When I was going through my teenage angst phase I always wished Danny would walk through my door and talk to me.

Mike Heck (The Middle)

Mike is the rock of his family, he stays calm through all the drama and craziness. He rarely gets stressed, which is funny, because his wife is the exact opposite of him. Mike loves his children, even though he sometimes can’t express it.

Dr. Henry Jones (Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade)

Father of our favourite archeologist is charming and funny. Yes, he maybe isn’t the best father, but he definitely is one of my favourite characters of all time.
